My name is Heidi Calvert. I will be your child’s Spanish teacher this year at SHPS. I teach Spanish to students in grades K-5. This will be my third year teaching Spanish at SHPS but will be my 26th year in education. I have taught in several states including Arizona, North Dakota, and most recently Virginia. I am looking forward to a great year with your child! I have always enjoyed learning about other countries and cultures and have been lucky enough to travel to Spain, Costa Rica as well as Mexico. In Spanish this year, we will have lots of fun as we learn about ways to greet others in Spanish, count from 1-100, learn vocabulary for people in our family, places around town, things in a home, sports as well as jobs and animals just to name a few. We will also find out how the names of the months of the year in Spanish are different than the names in English. During the year we will also learn about various Spanish-speaking countries such as Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Chile and Argentina. We will find out about the cultures of these countries including some of their special traditions, foods, flags, and types of geography. We’ll learn what the word culture means and compare some of the cultures of these Spanish-speaking countries with our own country. While we are learning Spanish, we will be engaged by playing games, singing songs, working in small groups as well as completing independent work.
