Only At Southern Highlands Prep Home / About Us / Only At Southern Highlands Prep Choosing Southern Highlands Prep We know that parents have a lot of choices for their child’s education. So, why do families choose Southern Highlands Prep and stay with us until their child graduates? It’s because so many wonderful things happen at our private school, #OnlyAtSouthernHighlandsPrep. Let us tell you more! Griffin Gold Here at Southern Highlands Prep, home of the Griffins, character traits such as kindness and honesty are highly valued in and out of the classroom and we consider them “Griffin Gold.” Every month, we choose a new character trait for our students to focus on. Students not only try to embody the trait but also inspire their peers to act similarly, as they shoot for the Griffin Gold. In addition to using this as a way to motivate students to be their best, most authentic selves, it is a way to inspire school spirit. The positivity that emanates throughout a school full of kind, honest, and happy students helps school pride live on! Kids Heart Challenge Every year, our entire student body raises funds benefiting the American Heart Association and their mission to promote heart health awareness. Over two months, students, staff, and families come together to raise awareness for heart health, from collecting funds for research to learning CPR. This fundraiser not only teaches students about effectively assembling for a good cause, but also encourages healthy habits that will last a lifetime. We raised over $60,000 this past year alone and counting! Love to Move From physical education class to extracurriculars like our Apex Fun Run, our students love to exercise their bodies and creativity just as much as their minds! Thanks to our regulation size gym and stage, large outdoor field, and playgrounds, students have many opportunities to discover their passions. Some love to play sports and move their bodies while learning about teamwork. Others express their love of performance and dance in our gym and on stage. All the spaces at Southern Highlands are here to nurture passions and allow each student to try new things. National Junior Honor Society Our 6th through 8th graders have a chance to prove their passion for learning and community service by joining the National Junior Honor Society. Members of the NJHS tackle multiple service projects every year, including donating goods to Three Square, a food pantry here in Las Vegas. Students have also worked with our younger students on a weekly basis to help them learn to read. Spirit Day Our students love to show their school spirit! On Spirit Day, they dress in school colors and even color their hair to help build excitement around our amazing school. We believe that if your child loves to come to school, they will love to learn. We want our students to be reminded of how much we appreciate them and want them to succeed by creating an environment full of energy, fun, and excitement. Field Trips At Southern Highlands Prep, all grades take at least one field trip per quarter. Field trips connect classroom learning to the real world and provide hands-on, visual examples which can help them to better understand certain topics. Our 1st graders go to an orchard and get to pick pumpkins, which focuses on their lessons about the environment and life cycle of plants. Our 4th graders visit the Mojave Desert to learn about different ecosystems, weather, and terrain. Our education leadership field trip is the biggest of the year. Middle school students spend two nights and three days at the Pali Institute and immerse themselves in learning about leadership while also adopting the basics of independence.
